Arts in the Community

At the Junior Sports Hub, we believe that creativity is just as important as physical activity in helping young people grow, express themselves, and discover new passions. Our Arts in the Community initiative brings together local young people and talented staff from the University of Leeds to collaborate on meaningful arts projects that brighten both minds and neighbourhoods.

Through workshops, mentoring, and hands-on creative sessions, young people work alongside university artists and students to develop skills in painting, design, storytelling, and mural creation. These partnerships allow them to explore their artistic voice while building confidence, teamwork, and a sense of pride in their community.

One of the highlights of the programme is our community mural projects, where young people design and paint large-scale artworks that celebrate identity, culture, and local pride. These murals not only transform public spaces but also give participants a lasting legacy they can point to with achievement and ownership.

By blending creativity, community, and education, the Arts in the Community programme provides an inspiring platform where young people can express themselves, feel valued, and contribute to the cultural vibrancy of Leeds.

Fireworks Safety & Bonfire Night

Our Fireworks Safety and Bonfire Night initiative is designed to keep young people informed, safe, and engaged during one of the busiest—and sometimes riskiest—times of the year. Working alongside safety specialists and community partners, we provide practical workshops where young people learn about the dangers associated with fireworks, bonfires, and seasonal celebrations.

These sessions cover everything from understanding safe distances and handling guidelines to recognising potential hazards and knowing how to respond in an emergency. By equipping young people with accurate knowledge and real-life safety skills, we help them make responsible choices that reduce accidents and protect both themselves and their community.

Alongside education, we also offer positive alternatives to unsupervised celebrations. Our supervised Bonfire Night activities bring young people together in a safe environment where they can enjoy the excitement of the season without unnecessary risk. These events encourage responsible celebration, strengthen community relationships, and ensure that enjoyment never comes at the expense of safety.

Through this programme, we aim to promote awareness, confidence, and safer traditions—making Bonfire Night a time that everyone can enjoy responsibly.

Cricket with Leeds Fire Briggade

Our Cricket with Leeds Fire Brigade programme gives young people the chance to connect with inspiring, positive role models while taking part in a fun and healthy sporting activity. Through friendly cricket sessions led alongside members of the Leeds Fire Brigade, youngsters learn new skills, build confidence, and form meaningful relationships with local emergency service teams.

These sessions go beyond sport—they help bridge gaps, strengthen trust, and encourage open communication between young people and the professionals who serve their community. Firefighters share their experiences, offer guidance, and demonstrate teamwork and resilience, providing valuable lessons both on and off the pitch.

By combining physical activity with mentorship, this programme creates a supportive environment where young people can stay active, feel encouraged, and develop a deeper appreciation for the essential roles played by local services. It is an engaging way to promote wellbeing, community connection, and a sense of belonging.

Chaand Raat Celebration

Our Chaand Raat Celebration brings families, young people, and community partners together to celebrate culture, diversity, and togetherness on the eve of Eid. This special event creates a warm, welcoming space where people of all backgrounds can share traditions, enjoy festive activities, and connect with one another in a positive and meaningful environment.

From cultural performances and henna art to music, food, and creative stalls, the celebration offers something for everyone. Young people play an especially important role, taking part in organising, hosting, and showcasing their talents—helping them develop confidence, leadership skills, and pride in their heritage.

By uniting families and strengthening community bonds, our Chaand Raat Celebration highlights the richness of our diverse community and fosters respect, understanding, and mutual support. It is a joyful evening that promotes inclusion, belonging, and shared celebration across Leeds.
